The forms that decide most tenders

Most searched comparison

CG 20 10 vs CG 20 37

Ongoing operations against completed operations, and why one without the other leaves a general contractor exposed the day the work is done.

Waiver of subrogation

CG 24 04 and WC 00 03 13

Two carriers, two waivers. The 12 19 edition of CG 24 04 also needs your subcontract to say the right thing.

Red flags

CG 21 39 and CG 22 94

Endorsements that never appear on the certificate but quietly remove indemnity and construction defect coverage.

How the loss is shared

Primary, aggregate and auto

CG 20 01 decides who pays first, CG 25 03 keeps a per project limit waiting for your claim, and CA 20 48 carries insured status onto the auto policy.

CG 20 10 vs CG 20 37

Which phase of the project is your additional insured status covering?

Attach or remove endorsements, set how long the subcontractor keeps completed operations coverage on renewals, then tender each claim. The verdict uses the 04 13 wording carriers issue today.

Edition dates

Four digits in the footer decide the coverage

Two endorsements can share a form number and give very different protection. A CG 20 10 with a 10 01 stamp covers liability "arising out of" the subcontractor's ongoing operations; a CG 20 10 with a 04 13 stamp covers only injury the subcontractor caused at least in part, and no more than your contract requires.

Carriers issue the edition filed for the state and policy period, so a contract that demands an older edition can be impossible to satisfy. Write requirements as "this edition or a form at least as broad", and verify the stamp on every renewal, because carriers move to new editions at renewal without telling the certificate holder.

Reading the footer stamp

CG

Line of business

CG is commercial general liability. CA is business auto, IL is interline (common to several lines), WC is workers compensation.

20

Series

20 is the additional insured family. 21 and 22 hold exclusions and limitations, 24 amends coverage terms, 25 changes limits.

10

Form

The form within the series. CG 20 10 is the scheduled owners, lessees or contractors form; CG 20 37 is its completed operations partner.

04 13

Edition

Month and year the wording took effect: April 2013. The edition, not the form number, decides what the carrier owes.

NCCI workers compensation forms carry their own stamp style: WC 00 03 13 has been issued as edition 4-84 since April 1984, so a WC waiver with that stamp is current, not stale.

Questions

Endorsement basics

What is an ISO endorsement?
An endorsement is a form attached to an insurance policy that changes its coverage. ISO (Insurance Services Office) publishes standard endorsements that most carriers use or adapt, such as CG 20 10 for additional insured status and CG 24 04 for waiver of subrogation. NCCI publishes the workers compensation equivalents, such as WC 00 03 13.
What is the difference between CG 20 10 and CG 20 37?
CG 20 10 makes the scheduled party an additional insured for the subcontractor's ongoing operations. CG 20 37 does the same for completed operations, after the work is finished or put to its intended use. Current editions of CG 20 10 end when the work is done, so most construction contracts require both.
Why does the edition date on an endorsement matter?
The edition date in the footer, such as 04 13, identifies the exact wording on the policy. Coverage changed materially between editions: 10 93 dropped completed operations from CG 20 10, 07 04 removed coverage for the additional insured's sole negligence, and 04 13 capped coverage at what the contract requires.
Is a certificate of insurance enough to prove additional insured status?
No. The ACORD 25 states that it is issued as a matter of information only and confers no rights upon the certificate holder. Your status depends on the endorsement attached to the policy, which is why Pikorua Security reads the endorsement pages behind every certificate.
